AI quarantine
lifting proposals
LANCASTER At a meeting
last Friday in Lancaster, Dr. Max
Van Buskirk of the Pa. Depart
ment of Agriculture, outlined plans
for lifting the quarantine zone west
of the Susquehanna River.
According to Van Buskirk, none
of the plans are final yet and in
dustry comments are welcome.
The key proposals are:
1. Hatching eggs, pullets and
day-old chicks would be allowed to
move to any area formerly under
quarantine provided they move
with a permit.
2. Nest run eggs would not be
allowed to move outside of the
quarantine zone. This regulation
would remain unchanged.
3. Any mature birds (broilers for
slaughter and spent fowl) which
originated in the quarantine zone
and were moved under permit
across the river into formerly
quarantined areas would be
allowed to move back into the
quarantine zone for processing at a
plant under USDA inspection.
4. Game birds would be exempt

Dr. Van Buskirk said that the
earliest date for lifting the
quarantine zone west of the river
would be June L While speaking
only for the PDA, Van Buskirk
added that the USDA and the state
are thinking along the same lines.
In other related news, the Pa.
Poultry Federation states that the
new target date for completion of
the eradiation of flocks which were
infected with the mild strain
of avian influenza is June 21. The
final flock will be depopulated on
that date. In the meantime, 13
flocks totalling 1.1 million birds
are scheduled for depopulation
through May and early June.
As of Tuesday, May 15,24 former
low path flocks had been
depopulated, totalling 762,D00
birds. The USDA reports that two
flocks in the former low path
category have not yet been
scheduled for depopulation.
