Stars head honorees at Hamburg FFA ba BY ROBIN PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent HAMBURG Three “stars” glowed among the cluster of “lights” at the Hamburg Chapter FFA awards banquet Thursday evening May 3, at the Shartlesville Grange Hall, Shartlesville. Honored for the enthusiasm and proficiency that they have shown in their projects, Harold Dietrich, R 1 Hamburg; Pamela Mengel, Strausstown; and Randy Long, Mohrsville, exhibited the ag know how that is in abundance in this chapter, and were honored with the Star Awards. “He’s been outstanding in almost every phase of the program,” Advisor, Lyn Van Tassel stated about Harold Dietrich. Harold was presented with the Star Chapter Farmer award by Van Tassel. Currently serving as the president of the chapter, 17-year-old Harold is the son of Harold and Diane Dietrich. He works with Holsteins, Jerseys, and Ayrshires on his parent’s dairy farm. Harold also enjoys raising and showing his breeding swine, and also carries projects in com production. The Star Greenhand award went to Pamela Mengel, the 14-year-old daughter of Leroy and Juan Mengel, Strausstown. Saying that “it’s a toss-up between animals and flowers.” Pam’s projects have resulted in proficiency honors in floriculture, and home and farm stead improvement. Working with mums, her goals include ex panding her buying and selling business and doing a better job in marketing her product. “Pam has shown the type of attitude that I would like to see in FFA members throughout the state,” Van Tassel stated. She is currently working with dairy animals and looks forward to the Lower Dauphin FFA honors top chapter members HUMMELSTOWN - The 24th Annual Parent-Member Banquet of the Lower Dauphin Chapter of the Future Fanners of America was held on April 17 in the Senior High School cafeteria with 275 members and guests present. Freshman Larry Peyton opened the awards ceremonies with the presentation of the FFA Creed. Lee D. Savidge, chapter advisor, presented the Star Greenhand Awards to Sharon Huntzberger and Tammy Baker. Tammy is on the parliamentary procedure team and participated in the County Creed contest. Sharon will serve as next year’s chapter secretary and won a gold medal with her project book in the state contest this year, as well as the Regional Production Credit Award for outstanding record keeping. Mrs. Cynthia L. Shaffer, chapter Bennett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bennett of RD Hershey, Citizenship Award Winner; and Cindy Baker, DeKalb Award Winner and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Baker of RD Elizabethtown. upcoming year in FFA. Randy Long took the Star Agribusinessman honors. The 17- year-old senior is the son of Leroy and Jean Reichert, Mohrsville. Working on his family’s operation of diversified livestock, Randy exhibited “the type of respon sibility that I would like to see in every FFA member,” Van Tassel stated. Randy received Foun dation awards in agricultural processing, and diversified livestock production. After graduation he plans to enlist in the Marine Corps, and work to someday achieve a farm of his own. “The chapter has expanded into many areas the members were afraid to enter before,” Van Tassel stated. Ed, a senior and Keystone Degree winner this year, was also the Star Farmer for Dauphin County. He served as chapter treasurer, won a gold medal in the state project book contest last year, won the chapter tractor driving contest, and has swine breeding and finishing, dairy herd, and veal calves as his projects. Dean Zeager, chapter vice president, was awarded the Star Agribusinessman Award. Dean won a gold medal in the state project book contest last year, participated in livestock judging and the forestry contests, attended the Washington Conference Program and the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. Tim Bennett and Kathy Hughes were recipients of the Citizenship Award. They are also seniors. Tim served as chapter student advisor, was on the livestock judging team, and in the dairy showmanship contests. He received his Keystone Degree this year. Kathy served as chapter secretary this year and is researching all the names and addresses of the Lower Dauphin FFA Alumni. Scholarship awards went to Tammy Baker, Doug Bauder, Chris Cassel, Craig Eby, Tim Foreman, Lydee Cassel, Kathy Crist, Kathy Hughes, Ed Huntz berger, Dawn Smith, and Dean Zeager. These members made the honor roll 2 out of 3 marking periods this year.
