    HARRISBURG - Only three
days were rated suitable for field
work for the week ending May 6,
according to the Pennsylvania
Crop Reporting Service. Activities
included spreading lime, fertilizer
and manure, spraying, harvesting
rye for green chop and silage,
cutting asparagQs, plowing and
planting oats, corn, alfalfa and
potatoes
Moisture
Statewide, topsoil moisture was
rated surplus by 62 percent of
reporters and adequate by 38
percent. In the northern region 46
percent rated it surplus and 54
percent, adequate. In the central
region 65 percent rated it surplus
and 35 percent, adequate while in
the southern region of the state 80
percent rated soil moisture surplus
and 20 percent, adequate.
Plowing
By the end of the week spring
plowing was 40 percent complete.
Last year at this time 45 percent
was complete while the five year
average for this date was 64 per
cent complete.
Oats
Approximately 52 percent of the
state’s oat crop was seeded
compared with 50 percent seeded
at this time last year.
Potatoes
Statewide, 19 percent of the
potato crop was planted compared
with 27 percent planted at this time
last year.
Barley, wheat
Statewide, 13 percent of the
barley crop was in the boot stage
compared with 8 percent in boot at
this time last year. Virtually all of
the wheat crop was in the pre-boot
stage.

Dairy Month? The Pa. Holstein
Association may have the answer.
Throughout the annual June
Dairy Month celebration, the Pa.
Holstein Association, in
cooperation with the Pa.
Restaurant Association and the
Department of Agriculture, is
sponsoring a “Mystery Tipper”
program. The program was first
initiated during Farm Show week
in which $350 was paid in tips to
waiters and waitresses asking
“would you like milk with your
meal.”
According to Doug Hershey, the
Holstein Association’s director of
membership services, designated

66 percent of reporters rated
alfalfa stands good and 34 percent
rated them fair. Clo-tim stands
were rated good by 70 percent and
fair by 30 percent. The amount of
feed obtaioned from pastures was
rated average by 54 percent, below
average 29 percent, and above
average by 17 percent.
Mystery Tipper milk promotion goes statewide
representatives - a dairy farmer, a
feed salesman, a bull stud
representative and the such - will
be equipped with $lO bills for tips.
While dining, if their waiter or
waitress asks in some form “would
you like milk with your meal,”
they will receive the $lO tip in
addition to their regular tip. They
will also receive a card stating,
“Congratulations! You have just
won $lO for suggesting MILK with
my meal.”
If the waiter or waitress doesn’t
ask to serve milk, the represen
tative will hand her a card stating,
“I’m terribly sorry! I was in
structed to give you a $lO tip if you
would have suggested MILK with
my meal.”

By the end of the week 32 percent
of the state's peach trees were in
the pink stage and 33 percent were
in full bloom or past. Last year at
this time 25 percent were in the
pink stage and 58 percent were in
full bloom or past. Cherries were
reported as 42 percent pink and 29
well as farmers, will have the
opportunity to participate in this
program, Hershey said. To do so,
they must pledge the amount in
tips they plan to pay and record
that information with the Holstein
Association. They will then receive
the cards mentioned above.
