Many of the sites in the state are located nearer the farm activity. At times the guests live in with the farm family and are welcomed to all the family meals. Dottie and Don prefer to be separate and not be responsible for the meals and entertaining of the guests. They encourage the visitors to join them at the main house and barn to participate in farm chores anytime, but also offer privacy in the secluded country surroundings. The house is ideal for family groups or church retreats because the five bedrooms easily sleep ten. No meals are provided by Dottie, but the furnished country kitchen welcomes any cook. We want them to know what we have and don’t have, before they arrive,” states Dottie. The farmhouse is currently without a television, which is the first thing Dottie tells the callers. She says most prefer it that way, but Dottie still expects to have a T.V. in the house soon. Some people have even inquired if there is electricity or a cookstove available. “The woman wanted to take her kids back to when she was growing up on a farm,” smiles Dottie. “It’s interesting to hear their questions.” Reactions from the guests vary greatly. A visitor from the city road all day in the trucks as they filled the silos last fall. He thought it was a wonderful vacation, while another guest complained about the smell on the farm. I haven’t had very many yet,” she admits. “But I haven’t had any trouble.” The couple confesses that they don’t expert to always be so lucky, but do have ways of handling bad situations. Members have been reminded by the association that they are the boss. If someone is causing problems they can be asked to leave. Or turn the inquiry away, if the initial telephone conversation leaves the owner feeling unsure. The association members meet twice a year in different areas of the state. They swap advice, ideas and stories. If there have been any bad experiences with individuals or families, the word spreads quickly. If the house would ever be needed for hired help on the farm, Don says it would easily be available. The purpose of the farm vacation is to offer a clear contrast with city life. It definitely does that. While inviting urbanites to a rural, open country farm setting, the farm families also are supplementing their normal farm income. Pomona Grange adopts resolutions QUARRYVILLE - Lancaster County Pomona Grange No. 71 held their annual spring meeting at Fulton Grange Hall, Oakryn, as guests of Fulton Grange on April 21. The Master, Clifford W. Holloway Jr., conducted a business session during which the Pomona Grange adopted three resolutions. The members resolved to urge the state to select a route to con nect the proposed Route 23 to the western end of the Route 30 Coatesville bypass and to proceed with construction as soon as possible.
