a new popular technique called
chain stitching. In the technique,
embroidery stitches outline a
prescreened floral design, giving
the fabric the look of elegant lace
cutwork.

sachet now, however, just read the
directions.
Sachets, by definition, are small
bags filled with perfumed powder
and stored with clothes. The
“small bags” may be extravagant
stitchery projects, lacy han
dkerchiefs, or literally anything
that can hold a scented mixture.
The mixture itself may come
from a kitchen, garden or a variety
of speciality shops. Traditional
sachet formulations date back
centuries and often include
flowers, oils, herbs, spices, lemon
peels, orrisroot or other exotic
ingredients.
As an alternative, the modern
sachet-maker can simply fill
sachets with scented teas from the
supermarket, dried flowers from
the garden or purchased mixtures.
Here are directions for making a
simple sachet.
MATERIALS: Fabric for
sachet; embroidery floss; needle;
lace; sewing supplies; sachet
ingredients desired.
STITCHING TIPS: 1. Stitch
sachet exactly as you would a
miniature pillow, using scraps of
fabric, lace and embroidery as
desired. 2. Use any opaque, tightly
woven fabric. 3. If you prefer sheer
fabrics, line fabric with muslin.
STITCHING SACHET: 1. From
fabric scraps, cut two 4Vi-inch
squares. 2. Embroider one square
as desired for sachet front. 3.
Gather lace trim to fit around
square. 4. Baste lace trim around
square, matching raw edges of
lace and fabric. 5. With right sides
together, stitch sachet front to
sachet back. Leave a small
