Sale manager Robert Card of McGraw said all of the pre-sale activities as well as the sale itself are of interest to beef producers, adding that, “the sale con signments will give a prospective buyer an excellent source of seedstock.” The bulls in the sale will have to meet the same structural soundness requirements as do those bulls in the New York Livestock Judging Contest sets Penn State record UNIVERSITY PARK - During a backlash of inclement weather, some 327 4-H and FFA members, along with 25 collegiate con testants, competed in the 11th annual Spring Livestock Judging Contest held recently at Penn State. The event was the largest judging contest ever held by the sponsoring Block and Bridle Club. It was the opening event of the 67th Little International Livestock Exposition at Penn State, to climax with “Show Day” today. In junior beginner competition, Gene Moore of State College was the high individual for total placings. However, Washington County 4-H went on to win the overall team award. The Chester County 4-H Livestock Judging Team captured the junior advanced team award. Montgomery county’s Steve McMahon placed Ist as high in dividual. However, there will not be the “bank of performance data on these bulls as is provided at the Bull Test Sale,” Card explained. He stressed that, as in all previous Empire Clkssic Sales, the em phasis continues to be on per formance. The sale will feature 21 cows, either with calves at side or due to calve this summer; 17 open heifers, 10 bred heifers, and nine bulls with most of the breed’s top bloodlines represented. An added feature will be an information program at 7:30 p.m. April 27. Dr. Dan Fox of the animal science department of Cornell University will discuss the Guidelines program and the performance testing program developed by Cornell and the Beef Cattlemen’s Association. Penn State student majoring in agricultural business management, won the collegiate amateur division. Another Penn State student, Nelson Beam, returned to victory as he won them collegiate professional division for the second consecutive year. Beam is an animal production major and a native Chester countian from Elverson. Members of the Penn State Block and Bridle Club supervised the contest. Judy A. Long of Carlisle was chairman; her assistant was Nelson R. Beam of Elverson. “Show Day” of the 67th Little International Livestock Exposition will take place today in the new Penn State Ag Arena. This will be the first event to take place in the structure. The public is welcome to attend and share in the festivities of “Show Day.” A refreshment stand will be available.
