State program will help farmers bear reassessment LANCASTER By joining the state Clean and Green program Lancaster County farmers will be able to avoid paying higher taxes caused by tax reassessment, county commissioners told far mers this week at the Farm and Home Center. The land must be at least 10 acres, be open to the public for outdoor recreation at no charge and not be used commercially in order to qualify as an agricultural reserve. To be a forest reserve, the land must be at least 10 acres, be slocked with trees and produce '25 cubic feet per acre of annual growth ” Farmers must enroll all the farmland in a tract and if a farmer owns two adjacent farms, he must enroll both in the program. To get the lower assessment for next year, a farmer must enroll by July 1. The commissioners are con sidering the two tax measures: reassessment and increasing the tax assessment ratio, which is the percentage of a property’s value subject to tax. Homeowners would probably bear the burden of the reassessment since industrial properties have not increased in value as much as residential tracts, Boyer said, and farmers would join the Clean and Green program. -TYPE 7 dtrs.
