Movement of soil creates problems on and off-site. Sediment creates problems off-site in the lowering of water quality in streams and creeks. Erosion and sedimentation control has been required on all earthmovmg sites the past 10 years since the Pennsylvania Clean Steams Law was enacted. Straw or hay bale filters have been used extensively as a sedimentation control measure. They are inadequate in certain situations and act more as a diversion than as pruning, harvesting and marketing. The guest speakers are Roland Daniels, Penn State Horticulture Department; James Travis, Extension Pathologist, Wayne Marz, Stauffer Chemical and four Extension agents. Geotextiles, or filter fabric, has become a superior replacement of bales. It is less maintenance intensive, filters much more efficiently, and is cost effective. Filter fabric is easier to transport to the site and easier to install. Filter fabrics have revolutionized erosion and sedimentation control.
