Damp, cool weather plus Confinement equals pseudorabies
GETTYSBURG Damp cool
weather and confinement can br
ing flare-ups of pseudorabies, a
disease that can have a
devastating effect on baby pigs in
the farrowing house.
According to Dr. Lawrence J.
Hutchinson, Penn State Extension
veterinarian, confining breeding
stock increases the chance of
disease spreading within a herd.
“This disease can kill all the
baby pigs in a Utter but rarely kiUs
adult hogs, Hutchison says.
“Pseudorabies also affects cattle,
sheep, dogs, cats and wildlife
where it is most often fatal. It
doesn’t affect humans”.

Hutchison says there are five
things that producers can do to
keep pseudorabies out of their
herds.
- Test all breeding stock to be
sure the herd is free of disease.
- Buy any replacement animals
from a herd that is disease-free
and make sure each replacement
has been tested and found free of
pseudorabies.
- Isolate replacement hogs for 30
days or more and retest them
before letting them mix with the
rest of the herd.
- Buy feeder pigs from only
tested sources.
- Consult local veterinarians
about ways to keep pseudorabies
out of the herd.
In addition, continues Hutchin
son, swine producers should keep
visitors out of the hog lots and con
finement facilities unless the
visitors wear clean, disinfected
boots and coveralls. Producers
should take the same precautions
before they visit other producer’s
herds and after they visit livestock
markets and other producer’s
premises.
Swine producers should stay
alert for the signs of pseudorabies,
Hutchison adds.
In pigs less than three weeks of
age, Hutchison says that producers
mowers
moun
should watch for lack of appetite,
lack of coordination, depression,
vomiting, nervousness, diarrhea
and convulsions, often followed by
death of the entire litter. In older
pigs, signs of the disease include
lack of appetite, coughing, rubbing
