According to Dr. Lawrence J. Hutchinson, Penn State Extension veterinarian, confining breeding stock increases the chance of disease spreading within a herd. “This disease can kill all the baby pigs in a Utter but rarely kiUs adult hogs, Hutchison says. “Pseudorabies also affects cattle, sheep, dogs, cats and wildlife where it is most often fatal. Hutchison says there are five things that producers can do to keep pseudorabies out of their herds. - Test all breeding stock to be sure the herd is free of disease. - Buy any replacement animals from a herd that is disease-free and make sure each replacement has been tested and found free of pseudorabies. - Isolate replacement hogs for 30 days or more and retest them before letting them mix with the rest of the herd. - Buy feeder pigs from only tested sources. - Consult local veterinarians about ways to keep pseudorabies out of the herd. In addition, continues Hutchin son, swine producers should keep visitors out of the hog lots and con finement facilities unless the visitors wear clean, disinfected boots and coveralls. Producers should take the same precautions before they visit other producer’s herds and after they visit livestock markets and other producer’s premises. Swine producers should stay alert for the signs of pseudorabies, Hutchison adds. In pigs less than three weeks of age, Hutchison says that producers mowers moun should watch for lack of appetite, lack of coordination, depression, vomiting, nervousness, diarrhea and convulsions, often followed by death of the entire litter.
