timing, Saturday, February 25.1984 UNIVERSITY PARK - Since Penn State’s earliest days as The Farmers High School, a cor nerstone of the insitution has been agricultural research and teaching. “Historically, in what is now the College of Agriculture, I see a commitment and loyalty to the school as key elements in just where agriculture fits into the total program of Penn State. There seems to be a pattern of dedication, longevity and a core staff that worked in harmony, despite many external pressures,” said Michael Bezilla, a Penn State historian, currently writing the history of the college of agriculture. Bezilla has been working on the history of the College for several months and has completed drafts of two chapters. As an example of the commitment and at times philosophical conflict, he said that when George Atherton was president in the 1880’s, he wanted the College to be at the “beck and call of farmers.” Henry Armsby, who was head of the Agricultural Gxperiitient Station, wanted to emphasize fundamental research. Armsby and a team of dedicated scientists remained on the faculty at Penn State, despite more lucrative offers. “He was so well known that he could have gone to many other institutions and been a pure research scientist, yet he and others stayed,” said Bezilla. Bezilla is the author of the of ficial history of the College of Engineering and is currently finishing writing the first official history of Penn State since the 1940’5. "It is the responsibility of each generation to interpret history,” said Bezilla. “Since Wayland Dunaway wrote the last official history of Penn State over 40 years ago a lot more in formation has become available.” This book is expected to go to press later this year. Bezilla said that the early history of Penn State and the College of Agriculture are one and the same, however, the early chapters of the College history will emphasize commitment to ‘ ‘ scientific agriculture. ’ ’ Bezilla noted that Evan Pugh, the first president of Penn State, wrote “the education of the agriculturalist is almost entirely neglected.” One of the main goals of land grant education is the adoption of scientific knowledge in making agriculture more efficient. Bezilla said that this was many decades in coming. Bezilla earned his Ph.D. from Penn State in 1978 majoring in the history of technology. His thesis was, “The Development of Traction on the Pennsylvania Railroad, 1895-1968.” He has a master’s in American history from 217 S.
