DlO—Lancaster farming, Saturday, February 25,1984 IH planter CHICAGO Results are in from the 1983 Planter On-Farm Per formance Test conducted in northern Illinois. An independent testing firm, Crop Pro-Tech Inc., of Naperville, 11., structured and supervised the test, comparing an International 800 Series Early Riser Planter, 12-row, 30-inch narrow, with a similarly-equipped competitive planter, also 12-row, 30-inch narrow. The tests were sponsored by International Harvester to give corn and soybean farmers a meaningful way to compare performance and productivity capabilities of the two planters. Planters worked side-by-side in fields evenly divided, planting a total of 2,075 acres; 1,055 acres of com, and 1,020 acres of soybeans. Two of the participating farmers drove the planters and performed all planting functions: just as they Early Riser Planter from International is compared to competitive model in planting corn and soybeans under conventional, minimum and no-till conditions. Performance Results The International Early Riser was able to travel over 3/4 of a mile per hour faster than the other planter and still maintain the required planting accuracy. In fact, it took the Early Riser five less actual operating hours to plant its half of the acreage. The In ternational could also be filled with seed faster (due mainly to the International’s large-capacity central seed hopper design). And finally, the Early Riser took less time to make changeovers from corn to soybeans, and for making adjustments to go into mmimum and no-till fields. Overall Productivity Crop Pro-Tech reports that when all the performance factors were combined, the International MINI-MIXER • Design Simplicity • Fewer Moving Parts • Rugged Construction • Affo r dable For Any Size Farm • Sizes- 45, 120, 180 cu ft proved to be the more productive planter, averaging over 18% acres planted per hour. The other planter covered just over 13-3/4 acres per hour. That translates into a nearly 50-acre advantage for the In ternational over the course of a typical 10-hour day. Combining all tillage practices, International Early Riser test plots yielded 136.41 bushels per acre, while the other planter’s plots yielded 134.61 bushels per acre. An advantage of 1.8 bushels for the Early Riser planted fields. On just the conventional-till plots, the IH produced 139.12 bushels, the other planter 136.73, a 2.39 bushel IH advantage. Combining all fields, the In ternational plots out-yielded the competitor’s plots, this time by 1.25 bushels per acre, 49.40 bushels to 48.15 bushels. On just the con ventional plots, the International averaged 49.29 bushels, the competitor 48.45, almost a one bushel difference.
