FARM SHOW - Swine com
petition at the 1984 Farm Show was
highlighted by the naming of the
Champion and Reserve Champion
Yorkshire bred gilts. This pair of
powerful gilts were shown by
Miller’s Yorkshires, of Spring
Grove, York County.
The sale of the York Champion
Gilt on Monday resulted in a
“first” for the Farm Show. The
Proceeds of her sale were donated
to Penn State’s Ag Arena Fund by
Richard Miller, owner, in memory
of his father, Robert “Bob” Miller.
Bob Miller, who had exhibited at
the Farm Show for several years,
died six weeks ago. His son,
Richard, made the difficult
decision to continue with plans to
exhibit primarily because his
father enjoyed showing and took
great pride in winning any award.
Therefore, the results of this
year’s competition seemed ap
propriate as the Miller firm took
both Champion and Reserve
Champion honors in Yorkshire
bred gilt competition.
The Miller family had decided to
honor Bob’s love for showing hogs
by donating the proceeds of this
sale to a cause that will serve the
agricultural community for years
to come. The Ag Arena at Penn
State will benefit not only college
students but all of Pennsylvania
agriculture, the family thought.
The Millers plan to continue in
the swine industry with son,
Richard, managing the farm. They
currently raise approximately 600
head of hogs and are building a
new farrowing house in
preparation for future expansion.
Thus, Bob Miller has left a
legacy that will continue on, not
only through the Ag Arena, but
also through the “family farm”
which is an important part of
Pennsylvania agriculture and the
Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Another York county breeder
claimed Champion and Reserve
Champion honors in Hampshire
competition. John Strawbridge, of
Stewartstown, swept this breed’s
honors with a January gilt sired by
CB 11-5. The Reserve Champion
was a March gilt sired by Trigger
1-8.
The Chester White show saw Jim
and Gus Parlett of Airville, York
County, sweeping the top awards.
The Parlett family continued the
winning streak they have had this
fall. The Champion was a January
gilt sired by Troubadour, the
Reserve Premier Sire at the
Eastern National Spotlight in
November. Reserve Champion
was a March gilt sired by TM
Paunch.
Duroc competition was topped
by Rick Pfautz of Stevens with a
March gilt sired by LA Red Copy
59-2. This gilt had previously won
Reserve Champion honors at
KILE.
The Reserve Champion Duroc
was shown by Smith Hog Farm, of
Washington. This deep-bodied
January gilt was sired by GD Tub
Full 11-1.
The Berkshire breed had a
strong set of hogs for judge Clyde
Shaffer of Albany, Ind. to evaluate.
Dennis Grumbine and Sons, of
Myerstown, Lebanon County won
this show with a repeat per
formance of last year’s Farm
Show. This flat-topped February
daughter of F.V. Stud 18-5 is due in
February to Firewater 14-5.
Beth and Greg Innerst, of Red
Lion, claimed Reserve Champion
honors with a February gilt sired
by Pacer 3-3.
Keith McConnell, of Volant,
claimed Champion honors in
Poland China competition, as he
has for several years. A February
gilt, this fancy pig was sired by SE
42S ESP Top Lad. The Reserve
Champion Poland was shown by
Harlan Wessner, of New Tripoli.

In the Spotted Swine show, Leslie
Lazarus, of Germansville, came
out on top with his February gilt
winning the Championship award.
The Reserve Champion Spotted
gilt was shown by Gus and Jim
Parlett. This March gilt was sired
by FSF Homer.
John and Barbara Mummert, of
Tunnel Hill Farm, Seven Valleys,
won Champion Landrace honors
with their January gilt. This
family has also exhibited previous
Champions in Landrace com
petition at the Farm Show.
The Reserve Champion Lan
drace gilt was shown by Tom
Arnold, of Lebanon. This March
gilt was sired by DV2 Kosar 5-1.
Saturday’s nice weather also
brought an additional benefit to
Pennsylvania swine exhibitors.
It was a pleasant sight for
breeders to see spectators
surround the small arena and fill
sections of bleachers. Since this
part of Farm Show competition
was changed to Saturday a few
years ago, there has been little
public response to the show. Swine
exhibitors were thankful that
Hampshire champion and reserve champion gilts with John
Strawbridge, of Stewartstown.
