This pair of powerful gilts were shown by Miller’s Yorkshires, of Spring Grove, York County. The sale of the York Champion Gilt on Monday resulted in a “first” for the Farm Show. The Proceeds of her sale were donated to Penn State’s Ag Arena Fund by Richard Miller, owner, in memory of his father, Robert “Bob” Miller. Bob Miller, who had exhibited at the Farm Show for several years, died six weeks ago. His son, Richard, made the difficult decision to continue with plans to exhibit primarily because his father enjoyed showing and took great pride in winning any award. Therefore, the results of this year’s competition seemed ap propriate as the Miller firm took both Champion and Reserve Champion honors in Yorkshire bred gilt competition. The Miller family had decided to honor Bob’s love for showing hogs by donating the proceeds of this sale to a cause that will serve the agricultural community for years to come. The Ag Arena at Penn State will benefit not only college students but all of Pennsylvania agriculture, the family thought. The Millers plan to continue in the swine industry with son, Richard, managing the farm. They currently raise approximately 600 head of hogs and are building a new farrowing house in preparation for future expansion. Thus, Bob Miller has left a legacy that will continue on, not only through the Ag Arena, but also through the “family farm” which is an important part of Pennsylvania agriculture and the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Another York county breeder claimed Champion and Reserve Champion honors in Hampshire competition. John Strawbridge, of Stewartstown, swept this breed’s honors with a January gilt sired by CB 11-5. The Reserve Champion was a March gilt sired by Trigger 1-8. The Chester White show saw Jim and Gus Parlett of Airville, York County, sweeping the top awards.
