Puppies born at the scientific breeding station in Mendham Township will soon be ready for loving homes. The Seeing Eye pays veterinary expenses and provides a monthly allowance to help defray other puppy raising costs. The 4-H youngsters who raise the puppies LANCASTER Boys and girls enjoy holidays, birthdays and other gift occasions. From an early age they are active gift receivers, enjoying the anticipation as well as the gifts themselves. They enjoy being asked to specify particular items they’d like; to make Christmas lists and birthday lists. However, children need to ex perience gift giving too, says Greta C. Vairo, Extension home economist. Even preschoolers can participate in planning, making and shopping for gifts for family and family Mends. They need to earn why gifts are given. As a family member, a puppy gets the con fidence it needs to be a Seeing Eye dog. When it’s old enough for training, it will alreadv be well Gifts are for Giving for parents and children. Planning is the key. You need time if you want to include children in the process. A last minute rush to the stores to purchase a list of items won’t do the trick. The children can be involved in planning what would be just the right present for grandmother. They enjoy helping dad decide what to give mother, especially when they get to go on a shopping trip with him for the special gift. Older children can do their shopping in a semi-supervised way. One possibility is a family outing that includes lunch, or a snack in a restaurant. At the Seeing Eye in Morris Township, N.J., qualified in structors teach Seeing Eye dogs to guide blind people. Since 1941, 4-H families have been raising puppies for The Seeing Eye. These groups can be re-formed until each child has shopped for both parents, brothers and sisters. Wrapping gifts can be fun too, with “secret” sessions going on in different comers of the home as surprises are readied by children who are givers as well as receivers.
