A26—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, November 12,1983 Ohio, Maine exhibitors capture top Shorthorn honors BY LAURA ENGLAND HARRISBURG - Ohio and Maine exhibitors captured the grand championship honors in the Shorthorn Show during the Keystone International Livestock Exposition Tuesday. Ohio exhibitor Edward McLaughlin, Woodsfield, showed the grand champion female, an early spring yearling. The heifer, R W Delta Dawn, sired by Win dholme Robin King, was also named the grand champion of the Junior Beef Breeding Show. The grand champion bull honors went to a senior yearling owned by Hollis Smith, East Dixfield, Maine. GPM Trapper, sired by Green Ridge Beacon LB4, was undefeated in the show circuit this year, Smith said, and has been supreme champion over all beef breeds twice. The 1962 reserve All American bull calf was purchased through the National Sale, Denver, Colo. Bringing the Shorthorn honors back to Pennsylvania was Woodside Farms, Waynesburg. Woodside exhibited both the reserve grand champion female and reserve grand champion bull. Woodside Wachess Robin, a senior heifer, was the female winner, and Woodside Major Clyde, a junior calf, was the bull winner. Terry and Rhonda Kibler, Woodstock, Va., were named the show’s premier breeder and exhibitor. Tom Turner, Columbus, Ohio, judged the contest. Smith, Enola, was named the tenth “Livestock Man of the Year” award winner by the Pennsylvania Livestock Association at its annual banquet Nov. 4. Smith, who has been in the livestock business for iJ years, was honored for his outstanding work in the industry. Currently employed as the dairy and livestock specialist for Agway Inc., Smith began his livestock venture upon receiving an animal science degree from Rutgers University in 1955. A New Jersey native, Smith served for three years as a Vet Technician in the Army before joining the Agway staff. He plans to retire in February 1984 and pursue his avocation of wood working by making wood items and music boxes with his son at the Woodsmiths Company in Enola. Married to the former Kay Smith and father of six children, Smith has coordinated and worked with 4- H livestock judging contests. He was secretary of the Pa. Livestock Association for 11 years and managed the association’s food booth during Farm Show Week. Smith has also been instrumental in securing funds for education and youth programs. The Livestock Man of the Year award is presented each year to a person who has done outstanding work for the state’s livestock in dustry. Initiated in 1973, winners have included: 1973, Herman Purdy; 1974, Stan Gates; 1975, Ben Morgan; 1976, John Henkel; 1977, Gilbert S. Watts; 1978, Henry Gruber; 1979, Max Smith; 1980, Dwight Younkin; 1981, Glen Kean; and 1982, Herb Schick. In addition to the Livestock Man of the Year award, four junior members of the association were also honored and received plaques. FFA winners were Melissa Peters, Stewartstown, and Harry Lewis, Middleburg. The 4-H youths were Janet Stuck, New Castle, and Robert Mikesell, Marion Center.
