Rutherford, President of the 3,000-member Dairylea Cooperative of Syracuse, in a telegram to New York and Penn sylvania House members called on them to defeat the Conable Amendment and support the Dairy Compromise bill. Introduced by Congressman Barber Conable (R- N.Y.), the Conable Amendment would replace the current fI.OD a hundredweight milk tax on far mers with authority for the Secretary of Agriculture to cut the dairy price support by as much as |1.50 a hundred pounds of milk. “For many months,” said Rutherford, “more than 85 percent of the nation’s dairy farmers have supported the Dairy Compromise MU which would provide some measure of cash flow assistance to dairy farmers who reduce production. Dairy experts across the country have said that this bill would provide a quicker reduction in milk production than anything else now being offered, including the Conable price support cut. “Originally, the Administration had agreed that if the Dairy Compromise bill passed both houses, President Reagan would approve it. Now, the ad ministration has stepped into the congressional debate and tipped the scales in favor of a measure that will unquestionably put thousands of dairy fanners out of business across the country.” Rutherford said that if the House passes the Conable Amendment, there is great doubt that a House- Senate Conference committee, faced with the prospect of com promising two greatly different bills can come up with a legislative solution. “The net result,” he said “will be a continuation of the $l.OO milk tax for many months, perhaps until a SAVE 40% on New Replacement Belts For Farm Machines • Bale Thrower Belts *52.00 • Grove-Gehl-Int.-S.U Wagon Box Belts *9B to *l2O Also Available: Bean Picker Belts & Big Round Baler Belts Any flat belt can be custom made for your farm machinery (cleats installed). By that time, irreparable damage will have been done to the nation’s economy. The dairy industry is one of the major sources of Jobs and commerce in this country.
