B2B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 15,1983 Ag Hall honors Townsend NEWARK, Del. In a special rededication ceremony Saturday, Oct. 1, the University of Delaware changed the name of its recently renovated Agricultural Hall to Townsend Hall, in honor of John Gillis Townsend, Jr., a former Delaware governor (1917-1921) and U.S. senator (1928-1941). The building, which now houses faculty and extension offices, an agricultural library and com puting center for the College of Agricultural Sciences, was (con structed in the early 1950 s at a cost of $1,250,000. The $1.5 million renovation was made possible largely through individual, cor porate and foundation gifts. The fund raising campaign was chaired by Preston C. Townsend, son of the late governor, long time member of the university board of trustees and chairman of the board’s agricultural committee. When built in 1952, Agricultural Hall was designed to provide office and laboratory space for the seven academic departments of the College of Agricultural Sciences (which at the time had 24 teaching faculty and 165 students), the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Cooperative Extension Service. By 1979, all these units had far outgrown this space and con struction of a new research and teaching facility, Worrilow Hall, was begun with a state ap propriation of $6.5 million. Renovation of Agricultural Hall began in March, 1981 and involved creation of new laboratories, a computing center, expansion of the college library, and the redesign of departmental and divisional of fices. According to Dean Donald F. Crossan, the combined space of Agricultural Hall now rededicated as John G. Townsend, Jr. Hall and Worrilow Hall provides excellent and efficient facilities for the 685 students EXPERT REPAIRS _ FENCERS • GENERATORS • STARTERS * v • ALTERNATORS PEQUEA BATTERIES mSB Ronks, PA FRANKLIN H. John G. Townsend, Jr. (1871- 1964) settled in Selbyville, Del. at the turn of the century. As a young farmer he promoted the produc tion of strawberries, advocating the use of refrigerated rail cars to carry these and other Delaware produce to metropolitan areas. Besides strawberries, he grew string beans, orchard crops and poultry. A prominant spokesman for farmers and the agricultural in dustry, as governor he encouraged and helped pass bills providing for worker’s compensation, mothers’ pensions, the creation of the State Highway Department, income and inheritance taxes, and increased appropriations for the black schools in the state. As U.S. senator, he introduced a bill to amend the patent laws to include agriculture a key element in the efforts to develop new crop varieties. Recognizing the international importance of the Plant Patent Act, the American Academy for the Advancement of Science acclaimed it as the most important piece of legislation enacted by the Seventy-first Congress. Special plaques have been placed in Townsend Hall, recognizing the generosity of major donors to the renovation project: the Agway Foundation; Lillian and Jack Burris; Mr. Byard V. Carmean; the Hon. Elbert N. Carvel; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert H. Flickinger; ICI Americas, Inc., Wilmington, Del.; the Milford Fertilizer Company; the Newton Foundation; Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Peoples; Rohm and Haas Company; Southern States Cooperative, Inc.; and Preston C. Townsend.
