Langel’s hobby earns him Ayrshire championship
BY LAURA ENGLAND
HARRISBURG - A retired Ohio
dairyman, who shows cattle as a
hobby, walked off with top honors
in the Eastern National Ayrshire
Show, Wednesday, at the Farm
Show Building.
Nelson Langel, owner of the
senior and grand champion
female, sold his 95-head Ayrshire
herd last June and retired from
fanning. He did not, however,
retire from the show ring and in
July decided to buy a string of
eight show cattle.
Of these eight, Langel got more
than he bargained for with Meigs
Creek C Fancie Marie who was
named the Eastern Show cham
pion. Marie, owned by Nelson and
Laura Langel of Scotch Haven
Farms, Kirkersville, Ohio, is a 6-
year-old sired by Oak Ridge
Flashy Classic.
Langel, who’s been farming for
60 years, showed Marie at the
Eastern Ayrshire Show in 1982 and
won reserve grand champion. In
capturing the grand title this year,
he said his champion has
developed and matured more
during the past year.
The reserve senior and grand
ribbons went to Matoon Pond
Farm, Gouveneur, N.Y., and
Matoon Pond Carrie’s Alison.
Owned by John Bell, 4-year-old
Alison is a Laurellea Dawn's Bozo
daughter.

were earned by Barkstead Farm
and Gainey R. Julia, a senior
yearling heifer. Owned and
exhibited by Georgia Barker, a
chemistry and education major at
Mansfield College, Julia also took
junior and reserve grand cham
pion honors in the Eastern
National Junior Show held in
conjunction with the open show.
Barker’s senior yearling was
sired by Anchor Mere Jumbo. The
reserve junior champion of the
open show was Cottrells Starman
Hulla 11, owned by Cottrell
Homestead, West Kingston, R.I.
