Papaya compound stops velvetleaf PEORIA, 111. - A compound extracted from papaya seed stops germination and seedling growth of velvetleaf, a common com-field weed, but does not affect com. In US DA laboratory studies here, less than 90 parts of the papaya compound in one million parts of water, “completely inhibited” velvetleaf seed ger mination. Rebecca B. Wolf, plant physiologist, says, “Corn was unaffected even at concentrations of almost 150 parts per million of the compound.” Wolf and Gayland F. Spencer, research chemist, extracted the compound, benzyl isothiocyanate, from ground papaya seed with solvents in the first study reported from a new search at the Northern Regional Research Center for natural seed germination inhibitors. “We don’t want to suggest that benzyl isothiocyanate would be useful or practical in the field since we have no knowledge of that sort of application," Wolf says. “Greenhouse and field studies are necessary to determine, for example, whether seedlings that survive the treatment in the laboratory would be viable in the field.” Information on dosage, 2-SEASON PETERMAN FARM EQUIP. The concentration that stopped velvetleaf germination, 90 parts per million, reduced soybean germination 28 percent, Wolf says Velvetleaf, also called butterprint and piemarker, Abutilon theophrasti, grows in soybean and com fields throughout most of the U.S. Agriculture Handbook 366, “Selected Weeds of the U.S.,'' indicates it is "of great economic importance” in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Ten nessee, the Virginias and parts of adjoining states. The same concentration of papaya compound that killed 3-day old velvetleaf seedlings, about 60 parts in one million parts of water, reduced weed seed germination 72 percent. It reduced soybean germination 11 percent. “Many plants produce chemicals that are harmful bj, other species and help to reduct competition in their natural habitats,” Wolf says. The benzyl isotiuoccyanate found in papaya, Canca papaya, is found also in the cabbage family, Cruciferae, and in the nasturtium family, Tropaeolaceae. ■** ’-r k 4 v v ’ & * V ,*> v'v MS. .jV’.V ~ * umampiEicins MC.
