Pa. dairy goat herd places 2nd in nation LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Pennsylv ania dairy goat breeders earned high honors for the state at the recent American Dairy Goat Association National Show held recently during the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. 244 exhibitors from 35 states and Canada entered 1,554 dairy goats of the Saanen, Nubian, Alpine, LaMancha and Toggenburg breeds in the competition. Twenty-one states participated in the State Herd competition, with each State Herd consisting of eight does from that state, with no more than four animals from any one farm. Top honors were awarded to Oregon; with Pennsylvania placing second; California, third and Indiana, fourth. Debbie Smeltzef, Pennsylvania Dairy Goat Association Youth Representative and owner of Posey Acres Dairy Goats, Bellefonte, was flag-bearer for the Pennsylvania State Herd. The eight does comprising the herd were handled by Danny Harter, President of the Pennsylvania Dairy Goat Association and owner of D & M Acres, Bellefonte; Dana Holder, owner of Pax Farm LaManchas, Bellefonte; Ann Miller and Susan Miller, owners of Little Rockspnngs Dairy Goats, Furlong; Jane Smeltzer, owner of Posey Acres, Bellefonte; Vaughn E. Solomon and Donna Forsman, owners of Magnum Dairy Goats, Orrtanna; Anne Whitney, owner of Wlnterbeny Nubians, Moscow. LaMancha Champion The highest-placing doe from Pennsylvania was GCH Rocksprmgs Tonka Ultra Violet, a 4 yr. old La Mancha owned by Susan Miller. Ultra Violet was named both National Grand Champion LaMancha and Best Udder of the breed. The Rocksprmgs LaMancha Dairy Herd, also owned by Susan Miller, placed 6th of 11 in group com petition. In the competition of LaMancha yearling milkers, Dana Holder’s Nolee’s Dolly Brown placed 4th and 3rd place udder among 31 entries. The doe was also part of the Ist place Get of Sire, Ist place Best 3 Females and Ist place Dairy Herd. In second place of 29 two year old LaManchas was CH Jenny Jump Rockspnngs Dixie, owned by Susan Miller. Posey Acres CS Little Weed took sth place of 14 in competition among 3 yr. olds. The highest Toggenburg placing was Ann Miller’s 4 yr. old GCH Rockspnngs Lynas Tremendous, class of 15 entries. Toggenburg Jr. Kids placing included 2nd place D * M Acres Harters Dehte owned by Danny Harter, 9th place D & M Acres Harters Miracles owned by Dana Holder and D & M Acres Harters Swedish Ivy owned by Danny Harter. Among intermediate Kids, Rocksprmgs Chaim Trem Terrific, owned by Ann Miller placed 2nd, with her Rocksprmgs Tno Gretel Gabriele placing 15th. In the Senior Yearling Class, Rocksprmgs Lam Pearl Penny, owned by Susan Miller, placed 12th. 13th place Jr. Get of Sire was claimed by Rocksprmgs Key Looks Limited. The competition of 2 yr. old Toggenburg milkers included three of Ann Miller’s does, with Rocksprmgs Premier Launba placing 14th, Rocksprmgs Premier Lila Lass placing 19th and Rocksprmgs Lim’ Leah Lou placing 20th. Rocksprmgs Pharoh Lyla Lynn, owned by Ann Miller placed 18th of 28 competing 3 yr. olds.
