BY KIMBERLY HERR LANCASTER This year’s Grand Champion pig at the Lan caster County 4-H Pig Round-Up and Sale, which took place Thursday at Lancaster Stockyards, was not owned by a farm youth. Instead, the 215-pound Duroc gilt was the property of Floyd Huber, a 15-year-old East Earl R 2 resident. If he does not live on a farm, how did he ever get interested in pigs? "Just by getting involved in 4- H,” Huber explained. This was the fist year he took Grand Champion, although he was a first place class winner last year. Huber is the son of Ivan and Fem Huber. Huber bought his pig from Wyand Durocs and Tamworths, Maryland, after reading their ad in Lancaster Farming. He showed two other pigs, winning another first and a second place. The Reserve Grand Champion was owned by Tom High, 17-year old son of Floyd and Dorothy High. His 225-pound pig was a Duroc- Hampshire-Yorkshire cross. High bought a gilt two years ago at an FFA show and bred her to a Duroc the public and will be held at the Agricultural Center auditorium. The Reading Fair’s rabbit show for Berks County raised animals will be Sept. 20th at 6 PM. Recently the county 4-H fair was held. Approximately 70 rabbits and cavies were shown by 20 4-H’ers. High, who lives on a 21-acre farm in Ephrata, was participating in the 4-H show for the first time, but he has shown pigs in various FFA shows. He is a member of the Lincoln Community 4-H Club. Did he think he would win? “I thought I maybe had a pretty good chance,” High said. There were 41 exhibitors in the show and sale. There were 123 pigs shown and 134 sold. The overall weight was 29,345 pounds, with 219 pounds being the average weight. Matt Parsons, swine Extension specialist from Penn State, was the judge for the show. “They were excellent quality pigs," Parsons said. He explained he was looking for “pigs that are lean, free from fat, with evidence of muscling in them.” Other top winners were Tim Pfautz, Stevens, with the Cham pion Pair, -weighing in at 195 pounds each, and Liz Chapman, Manheim R 5, with the Reserve Champion Pair, weighing 225 and 220 pounds. Prices were down from, last year. The Grand Champion brought 12.40 per pound, down 77 cents from last year.
