    Beef cattle slimming
HARRISBURG - Today’s
modern beef cattle have slimmed
down, with less fat than 15 years
ago, keeping up with consumer
demands for leaner meat, ac
cording to the Pennsylvania Meat
Marketing Program.
40 years of proof
Since 1940, Gehl has been building field
choppers and forage harvesters with one
thought in mind ...performance. And, year
after year, thousands of satisfied owners
prove that we know how to use that special
ized experience to build better machines.
Today, Gehl concentrates those 40 years of
chopping know-how into three fuel-efficient,
high-capacity forage harvesters:
Capacity King 1250. The largest capacity
pull-type harvester on the market. Gehl’s
exclusive 24” spinner delivery system keeps
forage moving with no cross augers to plug.
The giant, 9-knife, 2SW ” cylinder gives a
quality cut. And the new cutterbar adjustment
is the easiest anywhere, in-head hydraulic
knife sharpener and electric controls are
standard too.
New mid-range 1000 gives you the high
capacity you’d expect from the big 21”
cylinder and fast spinner delivery system.
Like the 1250, standard features include the
in-head hydraulic knife sharpener, adjustable

chopping job. Uses less horsepower per ton
chopped than many bigger harvesters. Uses
less fuel. The 8-knlfe cutterhead is set into

down to meet consumer demand
according lo Ur. L. L. Wilson,
professor of animal science at
Penn State,
Cattle breeding systems first
changed with the importation of
larger, leaner breeds of cattle,
primarily from Europe. The use of
>■
these cattle became widespread,
and are now predominately used in
cross breeding systems with
traditional English-type cattle.
Although the larger breeds will
probably never replace the
traditional breeds raised in the
United States, they do have
flexability of slaughter weights,
with less outside trunmable fat.
According to Dr. John Zeigler,
professor of food science at Penn
State, “There is a critical balance
between the amount of fat con
tained in the meat to assure ac
ceptable eating quality, and the
amount of trinunable fat.”
In addition, the beef industry has
progressed by selecting higher
Can your fields handle hard rain?
CHAMBERSBURG - Summer
thunderstorms can bring large
quantities of rain in a short period
of lime. Are your fields always
ready to handle these hard rains?
says John Akers, District Con
servationist at the Chambersburg
office of the USDA Soil Con
servation Service.
As summer crops are being
harvested, plans are being made to
make late summer hay seedings
and fall seeding of winter grains.
When the previous crop is removed
and a seedbed prepared, there is
no cover on the land until the new
crop gets a couple inches of
growth.
How many tons of soil will be lost
when the ground is bare during a
heavy rain? Up to eight tons per
acre of sheet erosion can occur
before rills or small gullies form in
the fields. Not only is soil lost, but
WOULD YOU LIKE
300 BU. CORN
PER ACRE?
A user of our new fertilizer received it last year. (Several ap- j
proved sources or testimonies) However it takes soil conditioning
the year before, same as athletes and Olympians must condition
their body in advance. One of our products costs only about $8 or
$9 per acre. Farmers report the following -
• Spongier, better textured soil, holds more moisture. This year
tells it plainly, obviously. Ask for pictures
• Less horsepower needed for tillage.
• Less need for insecticides and fungicides.
• NPK need reduced by V*
• Protein increased by V*.
• Minerals and trace elements greatly increased in soil and feed.
Livestock taste the difference. Make a test.
• More eggs, meat and milk per pound of feed.
• Cows do better, less trouble. If you already have trouble, con
sider the emergency plan below.
A Natural Mastitis Treatment That Winks
It is rich nutrition in the feed. Costs only about $2.75 per day, 2
feedings usually knocks it out except in old prolonged cases. Even
those sometimes when drugs have failed. It is Light Force
Spirulina. an algae that grows on water. Extremely rich in
vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, chlorophyll and
enzymes. It supplies the missing elements. Makes cows resistant.
It is double purpose - nourishing the cow and treating the cause,
not just the udder or symptom. Farmers say helps improve sick
cows in a few hours.

Good repeat orders prove that this mastitis treatment works. We
also have another excellent natural product to use in combination
for very stubborn cases and sick cows. Free literature. Dealer
ships available for both these becoming popular products.

growth rates and leaner ca '.tie m
the English breeds, Zeigler said.
"With less use of feed grains,
increased use of pastures, hay,
other forages and use of corn
silage, today’s cattle are faster
growing yet maintaining lean
ness,” Wilson said. "Corn silage, is
a whole plant product harvested
before the corn grain is mature. ’ ’
Cattle are also slaughtered at
slightly lighter weights than years
ago, thus decreasing the amount of
carcass fat and trunmable fat in
retail cuts. Espy said. Slight
changes in cattle grades favor
carcasses from younger cattle,
allowing cattlemen to custom
finish beef to their customers’
preferences.
organic matter, lime, fertilizer,
seeds, and pesticides are often
washed out of the field.
Many of the soils in Franklin
County can only lose 3 tons per
acre of soil per year and still be
able to maintain their long term
productivity. If you notice small
nils in your fields, then you are
probably losing up to 3 times the
allowable soil loss for your fields.
Establishing stripcropping,
diversions and cropland terraces
are all practices that help to
control surface water runoff and at
the same time reduces soil erosion
losses. Any one desiring work on
their farm may contact the Soil
Conservation Service office at 550

pointment.
