Peach market news HARRISBURG Week one of the Peach Market News has a strong market to report with very short supplies available creating a strong demand. Market peach packing has not really begun for this season. Most growers report August 1 as their starting date. The U.S.D.A. Crop Reporting Service Pennsylvania peach estimate released July 12 was 2,125,000 bushels, a 12% increase over last year’s final revision of 1,875,000 bushels. Nationwide there is a 6% reduction in supply over last years’ crop reported, and 23% below 1961. 1983 Estimates for Surrounding States New Jersey-2,300.000 bu., up 28% over 1982 crop; Maryland-458,000 bu., up 23% ; Virginia-604,000 bu., up 7%; West Virginia-460,000 bu., up 27%; New York-302,000 bu., up 17%; Ohio-208,000 bu., up 300%; Michigan-730,000 bu., down 30%; South Carolina-2,300,000 bu., down 47%; North Carolina-208,000 bu., up 80%; Georgia-1,770,000 bu., down 29%. The 80% increase in North Carolina is somewhat misleading. Their 1981 crop was 830,000 bushels. 1982 was down 42,000 bushels and the 1963 crop estimate is 208,000 bushels indicating they are well below their normal crop average. Ohio’s 300% increase is of similar cir cumstance. Sources reported that shipment from the south were 80% less than this time last year.
