There is one major thing on my
mind just now and that is my
garden. Due to all the rain it is
very productive.
By June Bth I picked over 100
quarts of strawberries in two
pickings and about 30 quarts of
sugar peas. I’d estimate that this
isn’t one-third of the crop. Besides
the back tiring job of picking these
there is the time consuming job of
selling them. Although, over the
years, I have developed quite a list
of customers and have never failed
to sell all that I can pick.
When I made one phone call to a
neighbor, her young son answered

the phone and I heard him say,
“It’s the strawberry lady.” You
know, that really isn’t such a bad
title to be known by. And
delivering berries does give me an
opportunity to know most all of the
30 some families in the nearby
development.
Yes, I do take time to smell the
flowers. This year my three iris
beds were filled with stately
blossoms of unusual size. A few
years ago my daughter in Seattle
sent me some rhizomes and I now
have six lovely shades. I gave
many bouquets away and put some
in the cemetery too. I also enjoy

When I lifted my eyes to nearby
trees, I saw some unusual things.
The white grape has climbed to the
topmost branches of the apricot
tree and now I know that I can’t
gather them this fall. We also have
a nest of blue jays in a crotch of the
white mulberry tree outside the
kitchen window. And, instead of
the usual noisy “thief, thief” cry,
they went about the work of
feeding their young very quietly.
Now I must run and pick berries.
