Md. weed science field days
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland farmers will have a
chance to see firsthand the latest in
weed control research during the
University of Maryland’s annual
Weed Science Field Days, set for
three consecutive days later this
month.
The field days are spread over
several geographic locations on
the Delmarva peninsula so
Maryland farmers can take ad
vantage of the field day m their
area, according to Ronald Ritter,
associate professor of agronomy.
The following is this year’s
schedule:
Tuesday, June 21 - Farmers in
the southern Delmarva Peninsula

CHAMBERSBURG - The
Adams County Holstein
Association has slated its annual
Twi-light meeting for June 23 at 7
p.m. Rhodes Enterprises, R. D. 2,
New Oxford will host the meeting
that will focus on milk promotion.
Rhodes Enterprises is a dairy
farm owned and operated by Don
Rhodes and his two sons Ted and
Don. A tour will be given of their
modem dairy set up that includes,
a milking parlor, a free stall bam
and silos.
Participants will have the op
portunity to test their dairy cattle
judging abilities by judging one
class of cows and one class of
heifers.
Special activities chairman,
David Kehr has lined up speakers
who are involved in milk
promotion to share their ideas on
ways to increase milk con
sumption.
Speakers include, Sue Beshore of
the Atlantic Dairy Association,
Doug Hershey of the Pennsylvania
Holstein Association, and Don
Trumble, director of Food Services
of Washington County, Maryland
schools.

Trumble has been instrumental
in getting milk shakes in the school
lunch menu at high schools in
Washington County. Milk shakes
have been very popular with the
high school students, according to
Trumble and when included as
part of the school platter, has in
creased its sales. The milk shakes
meet all the federal nutritional
requirements for milk in the school
lunch program. Trumble has been
approached by several other
counties in Maryland interested in
initiating a similar program.
Kehr reports that dairymen in
Adams County would like to have
milk shakes available in school
throughout the county.
