D3o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 18,1983 Md. weed science field days COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland farmers will have a chance to see firsthand the latest in weed control research during the University of Maryland’s annual Weed Science Field Days, set for three consecutive days later this month. The field days are spread over several geographic locations on the Delmarva peninsula so Maryland farmers can take ad vantage of the field day m their area, according to Ronald Ritter, associate professor of agronomy. The following is this year’s schedule: Tuesday, June 21 - Farmers in the southern Delmarva Peninsula can see weed control research on Promotion subject of Twi-light meeting CHAMBERSBURG - The Adams County Holstein Association has slated its annual Twi-light meeting for June 23 at 7 p.m. Rhodes Enterprises, R. D. 2, New Oxford will host the meeting that will focus on milk promotion. Rhodes Enterprises is a dairy farm owned and operated by Don Rhodes and his two sons Ted and Don. A tour will be given of their modem dairy set up that includes, a milking parlor, a free stall bam and silos. Participants will have the op portunity to test their dairy cattle judging abilities by judging one class of cows and one class of heifers. Special activities chairman, David Kehr has lined up speakers who are involved in milk promotion to share their ideas on ways to increase milk con sumption. Speakers include, Sue Beshore of the Atlantic Dairy Association, Doug Hershey of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, and Don Trumble, director of Food Services of Washington County, Maryland schools. open Tuesday vegetables and grain crops at the Virginia Truck and Ornamental Research Station, Painter, Va. (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Wednesday, June 22 - Weed control research in com and soybeans will be on display for eastern peninsula farmers at the University of Delaware Georgetown Research Station, Georgetown, Del. (8 a.m. to 12 noon). Farmers on Maryland’s southern Eastern Shore will have their choice of vegetable weed control at the University of Maryland Vegetable Research Farm, Salisbury, Md. (1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.), or johnsongrass, no-till com and soybeans weed control at the University’s Poplar Hill Trumble has been instrumental in getting milk shakes in the school lunch menu at high schools in Washington County. Milk shakes have been very popular with the high school students, according to Trumble and when included as part of the school platter, has in creased its sales. The milk shakes meet all the federal nutritional requirements for milk in the school lunch program. Trumble has been approached by several other counties in Maryland interested in initiating a similar program. Kehr reports that dairymen in Adams County would like to have milk shakes available in school throughout the county. Thursday, June 23 - More corn and soybeans weed control will be on display for upper Eastern Shore farmers at the University’s Wye Research and Education Center, Queenstown, Md. (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.). For farmers on the west side of the Chesapeake Bay, weed control in no-till com can be seen at the University’s Plant Research Farm, Silver Spring, Md. Because Maryland has had a exceptionally wet spring, this year’s field days will not include postemergence herbicide trials for soybeans, according to Ritter.
