    ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The
Maryland Department of
Agriculture’s aerial battle against
the gypsy moth has ended for the
year as the last spray flights were
flown in Baltimore, Frederick and
Washington counties on May 26.
Approximately 120,000 acres
were treated in the campaign
waged in 11 counties of the state.
Spray operations, ducking winds
and ram on many days, were
completed within the allotted
period despite starting about a
week late.

the complex and precisely timed
effort. “The contract applicators,
their pilots and ground support
people and our MDA personnel all
put in some long hours with most
spray days beginning at 4 A.M. We
also received help from members
of the Maryland Cooperative
Extension Service, the U.S. Army,
U.S. Forest Service, USDA’s
APHIS and especially, the
Maryland Forest Service”, he
said.

suppression campaign aimed at
preventing widespread defoliation
by the gypsy moth which is
regarded as the most serious forest
pest of the Northeast.
In 1982, a total of about 48,500
acres were treated in seven
counties during the month of May.
Timing for an effective spray
program is critical, Mr. Tichenor
pointed out, because the most
effective control of the pest can be
achieved with modest use of
chemicals if the insects can be
combatted in their early stages of

According to Donald Bollinger,
Lebanon Conservation District
Board Chairman, “Rev. Hoover
stresses the importance of good
soil stewardship and conservation
on all land. Not only on his own
farms, but also on farmlands
which he rents”.
