Donald Lutz, Mohrsville, Chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Ser vice, was on hand to present Charles Savige and plaqua honoring him for ten years of service as a “community com mitteemen”. Lutz also reported that in 1982, the ASCS program helped share the cost of conservation work for 80 participants who received a total of $52,915.00 on 90 farms in Berks County. Continuing with his report, Lutz stated that 378 farmers enrolled in the wheat program, 125 in the barley program, 628 in the corn program, 9 in the Grain Sorghum program, and 333 in the oats. Very active in regards to politics and farmers, Lutz commented that he is against charging the usury fees that the government dictates. “Usury is forbidden 12 times in the Bible”, Lutz stated. Lutz attends all state and national planning meetings as possible and says, “sometimes when you make a wild statement, your challenged but the do-it-yourselfer is still ahead of the governments organized research”. Lutz concluded. Jack Gounder, Shillington, Urban member of the BCCD Board of Directors, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and being “primary time”, there were many introductions to be made as he introduced the many in cumbents and candidates. Mary Ann Riroby, Chairman of the BCCD, stated, “All of us are offering our knowledge and ex periences without pay,...we’re doing a lot for you”.
