To Appreciate The Grass Family Most of our farm crops classify into two broad families of plants - grasses and legumes. Each family contributes greatly to producing food for us and feed as gram and forage to be consumed by livestock and poultry. Even though there are very obvious differences between these two crop families, we often overlook the contribution grasses make to our total agricultural production, reminds Arnold G. Lueck, Extension agent in agronomy. Take field com, for example. It’s our county’s biggest acreage crop. Corn has value both as grain and forage (mostly / as corn silage;. Corn is really an annual summer grass plant growing out there. Most of the grasses that we grow, however, rate as cool-season crops. We see them thriving best early and late in the growing season. As soil conserving crops, the perennial and winter annual grasses do us a great service. Latrobe, PA 15650 Now is the Time 1
