Pastures for dairy cows UNIVERSITY PARK - In #'recent years, there has been a strong trend in dairying toward year round, drylot feeding, ac cording to Jud Heinrichs, Penn State Extension dairy specialist. Mechanical harvesting and feeding of greenchop forages as haylage, silage, or hay have become a preferred method of feeding in many commercial dairy operations. Pasturing is very' difficult in terms of management because of the large size of most herds. Chopping increases forage utilization by reducing field waste and cutting down on >ome energy expenditure of the dairy cow when compared to grazing. However, equipment and fuel costs are much higher. Heinrichs says that alfalfa-grass pastures will provide adequate protein for high producing dairy cows. Milk production can be increased by adding an energy supplement such as com to the Rations. Due to the large amount of protein in high quality forage, less grain is normally required to get maximal production than coventional ration. Basis for optimum supplementation of forages with grain concentrates would be to add only enough grain to bring the total ration digestib ility to 67 percent, the point where digestibility no longer limits in take. Pasture management systems for dairy cattle can be classified as continuous grazing and alternate or rotational grazing. Continuous grazing is a system in which cattle remain on one pasture throughout the grazing season. Leola, PA 17540 717-656-2321 producing dairy cows, is a system in which the pasture area is divided into several sections and time is allowed for regrowth between grazing. This system is also referred to as strip grazing. The stocking rate of a pasture system is a very im portant management factor in efficient utilization of pastures. A heavy grazing system refers to a rate of stocking that will remove most of the available forage in a short period of time. Quite often a system like this needs a group of follow-up heifers orlow producing cows in early spring and late fall to handle the excess forage. The rotational grazing or pad dock system appears to work the best in terms of productivity. The object of the paddock system of forage management is to provide a continuous supply of high protein, immature pasture for grazing throughout the summer. This means grazing the stands for only 2 to 7 days and allowing the pasture to remain in the growing or vegetative stage for an extended period of time which helps to keep the digestibility of the forage at its peak. The role of pastures in dairy operations is very important and with increases in fossil fuel costs, may become even more important. In many areas of the United States during 4 to 5 months of the year, 'pastures can be utilized instead of using stored feeding systems. While it may not be feasible to depend heavily on pastures for large dairy herds because of the large amount of land needed to support the entire herd, some use of pastures may be found for the herd.
