Bl4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 26,1983 BY ROBIN PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent Shartlesville Shedding their winter doldrums and “hopping into” the “spring” of things, the Berks County Farmers Association Women’s Committee held their annual “Ladies Day Out” program last Wednesday at the Shartlesville Grange Hall, here. After greetings from Lillian Hamish, chairperson for the event, and John A. Kock, Berks County Farmers Association president, the women were treated to an “awareness” pep talk from Pennsylvania State Trooper Robert McLovich. A trooper for 12 years and currently stationed at the Ham burg barracks, McLovich is devoting much of his time promoting crime prevention to gatherings across the county and introducing a “crime watch” program. “Our program is to get everybody involved...be aware,” McLovich said. With the average burglary taking about three minutes to complete, neighbors must leam to help each other, McLovich war ned. The biggest problem, ac cording to McLovich is apathy. “People just don’t want to get involved," he continued. McLovich is currently con tacting all township supervisors in the county to assist in starting the crime watch program. “The most important thing (in crime prevention) are your neighbors. Concerned neighbors working together make a safe neighborhood," McLovich said. “Lets start getting involved.” Following are tips McLovich offered for protecting property. When going out at night, turn on several lights in at least two different parts of the bouse. A radio or tape player could be turned on, also. If away for several days, have a neighbor watch your property, turn lights on and off at different intervals, collect your mail, change positions of your window shades, and park a car in your driveway. Do not leave notes for delivery men. Anyone can read notes and realize that there will be no one home. Cut away any shrubbery or trees restricting the view to your windows and doors. Install locks and bolts on door. If confronted by intruders (Turn to Page 616) The annual Berks County Ladies Day Out, lai inexpensive crafts made using materials from around the house or farm. Esther Becker, a blind pianist and singer, entertained the women with old-fashioned favorites and country charm. ♦ I * If | f . ■^S' 5 KV* ' 5' **h. i *> ■ i S' & tf See your nearest HOLLAND Dealer for Dependable Equipment and Dependable Service: denandria.
