Since October 1975, he has been director of that Center which focuses on new and expanded uses for farm products. His own research at the Center included a broad search for potential new crops among previously un cultivated plant species. As director, he has strengthened research links with state Agricultural Experiment Stations. The Center’s multi-disciplinary research, by chemists, physicists, microbial geneticists, engineers, biochemists, and microbiologists, focuses on ways to improve the use of agricultural commodities as well as research on food quality and safety. Com, wheat, grain sorghum, soybeans, and other crops of the North Central Region are particularly understudy there. In his new role as Northeastern Regional Administrator, a position he will assume March 7, Tallent will be responsible for a broad program of agricultural research on food and fiber, particularly basic research. Soil and water conservation; productivity and quality of crop plants and animal products; improved nutrition; and studies geared to promote greater usage of agricultural products in domestic markets and export, are among the research investigations being pursued. A chemistry major at the University of Tennessee, Tallent received his bachelor’s degree there in 1949 and a master’s in organic chemistry in 1950. He earned a doctrate in biochemistry at the University of Illinois in 1953. He later worked at the NIH National Heart Institute (1953- 1957), and at G.D. Searle and Co., a pharmaceutical firm in Skokie, Illinois (1957-1964), before going to the ARS in Peoria in 1964. In 1979 he received an award of merit for Distinguished Service to Agriculture from the Illinois Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture. In 1981 he received the highest honor of SEB, the Distinguished Economic Botanist Award. Currently he is Treasurer of AOCS. In the international arena he serves as U.S. Delegate to the Codex Alimentarius Vegetable Proteins Committee and alternate U.S. Delegate to the Codex Alimentarius Fats and Oils Committee. These are two of several international committees responsible for setting standards for world trade in food products under the joint sponsorship of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Since 1979, Dr. Tallent has been the U.S. contact for the Biomass Conversion Project under the US-Japan Joint Agreement for Cooperation in Research and Development in Science and Technology.
