Attract birds
to home
LANCASTER Do you have
birdfeeders for the wild birds near
your home?
, “If so, and if you enjoy watching
the birds when they come to feed,
you may want to consider
developing a small area of your
yard to attract more birds to your
horaesite.” says Mercedes Seman,
soil conservationist with the Soil
Conservation Service.
Low growing shrubs such as
silky dogwood or red osier
dogwood provide cover and foil
berries for the birds. Larger
shrubs and small trees such as
hawthorn (or crabaoole), autumn
olive, flowering dogwood; and
winterberry provide cover, food,
and nesting sites few the birds as
well as ornamental beauty for your
homesite.
Clustering these plantings
together and varying the heights of
the shrubs and trees In each
cluster provides an appealing
habitat to most songbirds.
Annual grains may be grown in a
small area of your yard. When the
grains mature, tbe'birda will feed
on the seeds. Millet, sunflowers,
com, and grain sorghum are
several grains that provide good
feed for wild birds. A mixture of
these grains in a small garden
patch will attract the greatest
variety of seed eating birds.
By providing nesting boxes and
seed feeders in your yard near
dusters of shrubs and/or trees,
you offer the turds cover, nesting
sites and food.
