Ammonium nitrate and am
monium sulfate fertilizers have
been used for melting ice and they
may be effective, but the chemical
reaction will ruin a concrete
surface in just a year or two. Sand
and grit from deteriorating con
crete, when tracked into the house,
is a nuisance to clean and it marks
and scratches finished floors.
Some commercial ice melting
compounds containing ammonium
sulfate are just as bad as fertilizers
and the runoff from these melting
chemicals may kill grass, trees
and shrubs.
Course sawdust spread on
slippery sidewalks provides a
relatively skid-free surface. It has
no harmful effects on concrete or
plant life. It is mush easier to pick
up with a vacuum cleaner if
tracked into the bouse.
