Agribusiness students go down on the farm «C| WILLIAMSPORT - Since the beginning of the fall 1982 semester, 17 agribusiness students of the Williamsport Area Community College have spent every Tuesday at a Danville farm in Montour County. Arriving shortly after 8:30 a.m., students spend the better part of the day gaining practical work experience at the farm. In July, the college signed a cooperative agreement with the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Education for use of the Danville State Farm for educational purposes. Currently operated by the Department of Agriculture, the farm is the only .f\>ne of ten still operated by the "state. According to James W. George, agribusiness instructor at W.A.C.C., second-year students travel from the Earth Science Campus (near AUenwood) to the farm by bus every Tuesday. Oc casionally first-year students also make the trip. At the farm, students have the opportunity to participate in all the daily chores necessary to keep a dairy farm functioning suc cessfully. Students assist with daily chores such as milking, feeding, scraping platforms, cleaning the bam, grinding feed for the week, and spreading fer tilizer. They also assist Danville State Farm employees with heat detection, caring for new bora calves, making sure herd charts are kept up-to-date, and in ad ministering medicine with the aid tand guide of the herd manager. Most recently, students assisted in the chopping of corn silage for the silos. Curently, the students are getting tractors and other equipment ready for winter. Along with the dairy, is a milk processing plant and students also gain practical experience in the phase of the operation. Students assist in processing, homogenization, pasteurization, packaging and delivery of milk. They also help with clean-up duties in the plant. By the time they leave the farm, at 2 p.m., students have par ticipated in a wide variety of dairy activities. The use of the state farm for education purposes is viewed as a beneficial one for the college, the community, the far mer, and the Or-'--'*" <said. WASHINGTON, D.C. - A 35- year-old, 50-foot balsam fir from the Riley Bostwick Wildlife Management Area within the Green Mountain National Forest, near Rochester, Vt., will be the 1982 Capitol Christmas Tree. R. Max Peterson, chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, said the tree will arrive in Washington and be placed on the west front lawn of the Capitol at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Sponsors of the tree are the Ver mont Fish and Game Department and the USD A. Peterson said this is the twelfth Capitol Christmas Tree the Forest Service has helped to provide. The Danville Farm dairy operation houses 120 milking cows with a herd average of 18,000 pounds of milk and 720 pounds of butterfat per year and is ranked as one of the top producing herds in the state. Of the 335 acres on the farm, 265 acres are tillable. Primary crops produced are corn and alfalfa. Agribusiness at the Williamsport Area Community college is a two year associate degree program. Agribusiness openings currently exist for a new program beginning in January 1983 at W.A.C.C. The program is designed to prepare mm "’""ics for mid will conduct this year’s special tree-lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. Dec. 15, and members of the Vermont Congressional delegation will attend. Nearly 10,000 lights and or naments will adorn the tree. The office of the Architect of Capitol is in charge of decorating the tree and the lighting ceremony. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will include a variety of seasonal music from the Murrah High School Singers from Jackson, Miss., and a section of the Air Force Band. The tree will be lighted each day between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. until Jan. 2. This year’s tree is the second Capitol Christmas Tree to come from Vermont. The first was in ' * S9c* Of." The tree was planted and groomed to become a Christmas tree by the late Riley Bostwick of Rochester. Students learn the procedures involved in dairy farming and livestock and crop production. Business courses included in the program cover basic business operations and business procedures which are directly related to agriculture management, record keeping, finance, and marketing. Two hundred hours of supervised ex perience on approved farms or businesses are also included in the program.
