Maximum trap size in Pa. is 6^2-inches HARRISBURG Pennsylvania trappers are reminded by the Game Commission that under provisions of the Game Law, ex cept for underwater beaver sets, traps used in the state may be no larger than 6% inches. Section 603 of the Game Law provides that it is unlawful to use a trap “with a jaw, spread exceeding six and one-half inches, except a body-gripping trap with a Jaw spread not exceeding ten inches may be used for taking beaver provided an underwater set is made...” Several trap manufacturers are currently marketing “6-inch” body-gripping traps, but the devices are illegal because they are actually larger. Some traps advertised as “0-inch" measure 6 and 5/8 to 6 and 3/4 inches. Sometimes the measurement is nearly 7 inches. These are illegal devices for taking fur bearers. Trappers are urged to measure traps before purchasing or using them.
