CATALOGS ARE COMING!
Thanksgiving used to be the sig
nal to begin Christmas sales and
promotions but this year retailers
re not even waiting until after
Halloween. In case you haven’t
noticed, mail-order catalogs are
already appearing in mailboxes
and are being advertised widely.
They promise hassle-free shopping
for speciality items and low cost
buying to stretch your Christmas
dollar.
You can save time and possibly
money buying through mail-order
catalogs, but only with careful
planning. Mail-order buying can be
a little too easy and you end up
with more gifts, the wrong gifts,
and more bills than you need.
Here’s some advice on how to cope
with these catalogs:
—Before you order, ask yourself
if you are buying something you
really need. Is your selection a
planned purchase within your
budget or are you buying on im
pulse?
—Before you fill out the order
slip, be sure you have all the in
formation you need size, color,
packing charge, shipping in
structions.
—Once you’ve completed the
order form, check it again for

company you’ve ordered from and
a running total of the cost. If
you’ve allocated a certain amount
for Christmas spending, don’t fool
yourself that mail-order expenses
don’t count. They may not appear
on your credit card statement for
another month or two but paying
later may be harder than paying
now.

Pa. gets RAMP fun
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Eight
states including Pennsylvania, will
share $13,251,000 in supplemental
federal funds during fiscal year
1982 to help people reclaim non
federal land damaged by coal
mining.
Peter C. Myers, chief of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s Soil
Conservation Service, said last
week the funds are from sup
plemental appropriations provided
under the Rural Abandoned Mine
Program administered by the
secretary of agriculture.
Congress authorized the
program in the Surface Mine
Control and Reclamation Act of
1977. The purpose was to provide
individuals with cost sharing and
technical assistance in their efforts
to reclaim non federal land
disturbed by coal mining
operations.
Coal mining states to receive the
funds, and the amounts, are:
