Bl6—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 25,1982 Chester 4-H holds dairy goal round-up WEST CHESTER The 1982 Chester County 4-H Dairy Goat Round-up, held at the Kimberton Fairgrounds, was judged by Rick Stoneback. The Grand Champion title went to Panda, shown by Sue Miller. Sue Furlong, is a five-year member and belongs to the Che- Del-Be 4-H Goat Club and lives in Furlong, Pa. The Reserve Grand Champion animal was shown by Maria Seber of Linfield. Panda, a Toggenburg, won in the 3 yr. milker class. Sue also ac cepted first prize in the challenge class, beating last year’s grand champion and .an open show grand champion. The Toggenburg is a Swiss breed of dairy goat known for its medium size, yet sturdy, vigorous and alert appearance. The Junior Champion Doe, Rosebud, was shown by Jeremiah Weinstock, a tru£ feat for this first year member. Reserve Junior Champion Doe was Pesada, shown by Lisa Griffith. Lisa also took both the Champion Fitter and Champion Showman awards home. Reserve Champion Fitter was Jennifer Kerrick of West Chester and the Reserve Champion Showman was Josh Weinstock of Phoenix Ville. The dairy goat 4-H project in Chester County has a total of 34 members. They are expected to keep accurate and current record books, just as they would for other livestock projects. But they are Jeremiah Weinstock. This is Jeremiah's first year in 4-H. Sue Miller of Furlong, earned the Grand Champion title in the Round-up. Unlike other fitting and showing contests, the dairy goat* handler must be able to exhibit an understanding of the goat by knowing the parts of the animal and where their animal may need special attention in order to show it to it’s best ad vantage. Even the first year exhibitor must answer the judges questions. 4 win book awards ALLENTOWN—Brenda Werner, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Werner, K 2 Elverson, and William Kirk, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kirk, HI Honey Brook, captured first-place project book awards and champion trophies in competition at the Allentown Fair. Brenda’s single enterprise project book is on her brood mare, yearling and weanling born this past spring. Bill’s record is on his work experience project in his family’s meat cutting operation. Bill’s records tell what jobs he does every day, while Brenda maintains a record of receipts and expenses, as well as all conditions affecting her horses (such as the birth of the foal). Other students exhibiting project books were Bert Zerr, who earned a 4th place with her laying her record book, and Mark Zerr, who placed 3rd with his records on strawberries and a vegetable garden.
