Peach Bottom families sweep Solanco dairy shows
BY DONNA TOMMELLEO
QUARRYVILLE - Although
this year’s Solanco Fair dairy
show will not go down m the record
books as one of the fair’s largest,
those exhibitors present on
Wednesday and Thursday went
after the blue ribbon with no less
enthusiasm.
The number of entries had been
steadily increasing since the
completion of the fairground barns
in 1976 and 1977. However, fair
officials estimated there were
about 40 less animals, this year
than in past contests.
A Peach Bottom father and son
duo teamed up for top honors in the
Holstein competition.
Paul and Mark Welk exhibited
the grand and reserve grand
champion black and whites,
respectively. Paul’s champ Welk-
Crest Mohawk Skokie was elected
grand champ in this her first
tanbark outing. The 3-year-old
Woodbine Chief Mohawk daughter
has records to 18,000 pounds of
milk and 731 of fat for a 4.0 percent
test.
Welk’s son Mark took the
Reserve Champion spot with
Yankeeland Milestone Sherry. No
stranger to the winner's circle, the
2-year-old Poverty Hollow
Milestone daughter was grand
champ in Lancaster County 4-H
competition this summer.
George and Doris Hough of
Peach Bottom went all the way,
this year, with their 8-year-old
Jersey dry cow entry. Since she
was a calf, the Hough’s Milk-N-
Honey Generals Tinsel has been
entered in the Solanco contest.
According to Doris, the champ
always won her class, but this year
marked the first as grand
champion.
Another Peach Bottom family,
tsunS HOUgh,
join their respective color breed grand champs in the Solanco
Fair winner’s circle. The Hough’s 6-year-old dry cow, Milk-N-
Honey Generals Tinsel bested the Jersey competition, while
Schmuck's 4-year-old Spruce Villa S. Lett/ notched top
Ayrshire honors.

walked off with Grand and Reserve Champion Holstein titles,
respectively. Paul is at the halter of grand champ Welk-Crest
Mohawk Skokie, a 3-year-old. Mark is joined by his reserve
winner, 2-year-old Yankeeland Milestone Sherry.
swept the Ayrshire competition.
.Warren Schmuck, who exhibited
last year’s Solanco champ, must
be a believer in the adage, “like
mother like daughter." Schmuck’s
grand champ Spruce Villa S. Letty
is the 4-year-old daughter of his
1981 winner. The Oak Ridge
Commander Star daughter is
projected at 15,800 pounds of milk
and 848 pounds of fat. Her full
sister notched the Reserve Grand
Champion spot.
Cedar-Knnge Ingrid Anna
wrapped up the Guernsey com
petition tor owner Robert Kirk of
Peach Bottom. The 3-year-old
Deacon daughter, who was reserve
grand champion last year, is
projected at more than 14,000
pounds of milk.
The Eckmans of Peach Bottom
made winning a family affair in
Holstem fitting and showing
competition.
Brian Eckman, 12, collected the
junior division champion showman
and fitter titles with senior calf
"Asta.” Brian’s sister, Melissa
Eckman, 14, bested a field of
seniors to gam top showing and
fitting honors in the senior division
with her 2-year-old “Molly.” Brian
and Melissa are the children of
Don and Faye Eckman, Peach
Bottom.
For the color breeds, Steve
Wagner, 10, nailed down the junior
division showing and fitting title
with "Anne,” his Guernsey semor
yearling. Steve is the son of Bob
and Joyce Wagner, tjuarryville.
Ayrshire exhibitor, Kris
Esbenshade, 16, collected semor
showing and fitting honors with
senior yearling "Daisy.” Kris- is
the daughter of Fred and Nancy
Esbenshade, Quarryville.
