A26—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 18,1982 Peach Bottom families sweep Solanco dairy shows BY DONNA TOMMELLEO QUARRYVILLE - Although this year’s Solanco Fair dairy show will not go down m the record books as one of the fair’s largest, those exhibitors present on Wednesday and Thursday went after the blue ribbon with no less enthusiasm. The number of entries had been steadily increasing since the completion of the fairground barns in 1976 and 1977. However, fair officials estimated there were about 40 less animals, this year than in past contests. A Peach Bottom father and son duo teamed up for top honors in the Holstein competition. Paul and Mark Welk exhibited the grand and reserve grand champion black and whites, respectively. Paul’s champ Welk- Crest Mohawk Skokie was elected grand champ in this her first tanbark outing. The 3-year-old Woodbine Chief Mohawk daughter has records to 18,000 pounds of milk and 731 of fat for a 4.0 percent test. Welk’s son Mark took the Reserve Champion spot with Yankeeland Milestone Sherry. No stranger to the winner's circle, the 2-year-old Poverty Hollow Milestone daughter was grand champ in Lancaster County 4-H competition this summer. George and Doris Hough of Peach Bottom went all the way, this year, with their 8-year-old Jersey dry cow entry. Since she was a calf, the Hough’s Milk-N- Honey Generals Tinsel has been entered in the Solanco contest. According to Doris, the champ always won her class, but this year marked the first as grand champion. Another Peach Bottom family, tsunS HOUgh, join their respective color breed grand champs in the Solanco Fair winner’s circle. The Hough’s 6-year-old dry cow, Milk-N- Honey Generals Tinsel bested the Jersey competition, while Schmuck's 4-year-old Spruce Villa S. Lett/ notched top Ayrshire honors. .Qi ryville, and Matt Bushong, right, of Columbia, share duties following the Solanco color breed show. walked off with Grand and Reserve Champion Holstein titles, respectively.
