Pennsylvania Angus breeders came to learn about two of the newest trends in the cattle industry new yield grades and embryo transfer. \s r Lester Burdette, Penn State animal science professor, discussed the new yield grades proposed for the beef cattle in dustry. Burdette reported the National Restaurant Association is against the proposed system,citing the lack of high quality steaks and consumer satisfaction. Discussing embryo transfers was Dr. Jim Evans of Genetics Unlimited in West Grove. The field day began with a tour of the South Branch Farms herd, led by Bill Holloway manager of South Branch Farms. In his opening remarks, farm owner Robert Kinsley explained the farm is made up of 495 farmed acres. They raise com, alfalfa, and or chard grass. LUBING The beef herd is made up of 100 Registered Angus cows and two herd sires. They also feed out 250 to 300 steers in a feedlot. Prior to the field day the Angus Association held a membership banquet at the Ramada Inn in York. Mick Colvin of the American Angus Association was the featured speaker. He discussed the certified Angus beef program in which beef is marketed through stores at a premium price and is labeled as Certified Angus Beef, guaranteeing at least partial Angus blood in the cattle. Aiso on the agenda were judging contests which included yearling heifers, weight-guessing, and cow calf matching. There were two divisions: one for adults and one for juniors under 21 years of age. Winners in the junior division included: 1. Diane Krause; 2. Joann Rishel; 3. Rohm Shive; 4. Garth Sweigard; and 5. Eddie Champman. Winners in the Women’s division included: 1. Shirley Stnckler; 2.
