For, like most of the rest of this country’s economy, agriculture is in trouble —floundering through the muck of what politicians stili insist on labeling a “recession.” Recession nothing. We’re in a depression, wringing emotional and economic turmoil from the debt-ridden farm _ economy, the middle-class taxpayer, and the double-digit numbers of unem ployed who search the “help wanted” classifieds in mounting frustration. Ag watchers, those experts who tabulate statistics on the pulse of farming in America, warn that not since the Great Depression of the '3os has the food and fiber foun dation of this country been stretched so thin, with increasing numbers of farmers reaching the IF ITS A REAL DEAL YOU WANT WITH BIG DISCOUNTS YOU CAN USE NOW - SEE US! But - enough of this gloom and doom. For there is still so much to celebrate this July Fourth. One small reason immediately pops into my head. It came as an early July 4 birthday present to numerous fanners of the area, this thin piece of paper proclaiming that our interest rates were dropping, just a fraction, but dropping nevertheless. That’s just a drop of pain-killer for farmers agonizing through the labor twinges as they .trudge toward a rebirth of prosperity, still' planting and harvesting with unfailing determination. But the delivery promises to be a slow, tiring length away, and we must see our ways through this painful process. Our founding fathers belabored long, too, refusing to give up to overwhelming odds. From their A bySmgn AA ALLIS-CHALMERS trials by the fire of hunger, hard work, internal squabbling and finally war, the impurities of their ideas were melted off until what remained were pure faith and dedicated determination to forth the birth of a new era in a country. We in agriculture, as we remember them this Independence Day, must take courage from our forefathers’ struggles and know that we, too, shall emerge the better for this time of testing. ROY H.
