A32— Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 3,1982 WICHITA, Kan. - The 114th annual meeting of The American Jersey Cattle Club and the 24th annua] meeting of National All- Jersey Inc. convened in Wichita, Kansas, June 10 and 11 with ap proximately 300 attending. Wednesday featured tours to Old Abilene, Cessna Aircraft, Eisenhower Museum, Hanschu’s Jersey Farm and HAS Jersey Farm. The evening festivities were highlighted by dancing girls, a western shoot out and par ticipation in a genuine cow-chip throwing contest. Thursday, the National All- Jersey breakfast group was ad dressed by Pete Vander Poel, Chino, California. Vander Poel writes a deep pedigree being chairman and negotiator of the Dairy Employers, past vice president of the League of California Milk Producers and currently serving on the Correc tional Industries Commission as the California Agricultural Representative appointed by Governor Brown. Vander Poel explained the need to get involved in milk marketing and noted the progress being made in Washington, D.C. on higher minimum standards and the surplus situation. Governor John Carlin extended a warm welcome to Kansas and the opportunities it offered. G. Joe Lyon, Toledo, lowa, opened the National All-Jersey Inc. meeting presiding as President. An outstanding group of deep pedigree heifers sold in the National Heifer Sale Thursday afternoon. The sale averaged $2,269 on 44 head with a Cedarcrest .consignment from Faunsdale, . Alabama, selling as high in dividual for $6,500 to Walebe Farms, Inc., Collegeville. Semen was then auctioned off with $3,570 donated to The American Jersey Cattle Club Research Foundation. The Great Plains Classic followed with a cow from Butterfield Farms, BentonvUle, Arkansas, topping the sale at $5,000 going to J. Fred Davis Farms and Jay E. Pfeiffer, Forest, Ohio. The Great Plains Classic averaged $2,208. The annual banquet was held Thursday evening with Larry Steckline, Farm Director of KFH Radio and KARD-TV as Master of Ceremonies. W. Collins has given endlessly to The American Jersey Cattle Club as a board member and serving on the All American Show and Sale com mittees. He is owner of Arco Jersey Farm which consists of 225 cows. The coveted Master Breeder Award went to Curtis Hobson, Athens, Tennessee. Hobson is currently manager for Mayfield Dairy Farms, Inc. and was previously at Marlu Farm.
