DB—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, July 3,1982 Parke retires (Continued Irom Page Dfi) Advisory Council. Taking part in the retirement celebration was Alvin Oliver, executive vice president of the National Grain and Feed Association in Washington D.C.. Oliver praised Parke’s “bulldog tenacity” which, he said, was molded during the Great Depression. Oliver attributed the growth in Penn Ag’s membership and staff, in part, to the efforts of its executive vice president who “championed the free market economy for Pennsylvania agriculture.” _ Besides praise from colleagues, Parke was honored with monetary appreciation durihg the Sunday evening celebration. Bill Sprenkle, former PennAg president (1956-57) presented him with a $4,000 gift certificate “from his favorite travel agency” and the other past presidents of Penn Ag. The Association’s Board of Directors’ gifts to Parke were not as straight-forward. President Thomas Ziegler asked Parke to recall the fantasy story The Wizard of Oz and the gifts sought by the scarecrow, lion, and tin' man. - Instead of courage, a heart and a brain, which Ziegler acknowledged were not on Parke’s list of needs, the president presented him with a $9OO gift certificate, a framed certificate of appreciation, and a round medallion to wear around his neck with the letters “tuit” printed on one side. This, said Zeigler, was to help Parke “get around to everything you’ve been putting off until retirement.” After recovering from the shock of receiving these gifts, Parke, very much hi character-, said, “Now I know why .Frank Sinatra retires so often. And, until now, I’ve been in heaven. ” Summing up his feelings, Parke, smiling, said he -looks at retirement as merely a “change in jobs taking out the garbage and mowing the lawn.”—SM HOWDY MR.
