B3o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 5,1982 WEST FRIENDSHIP, Md. - Mother Nature threatened ail day, last Saturday, but mercifully spared her ram as more than 400 Maryland 4-H’ers and FFA members exhibited a variety of livestock during the 54th annual Wills Spring 4-H and FFA Fair. The fair had its origins as a dairy show but eventually included beef cattle classes in the competition. More recently, dairy goats were added to the show in 1976, while classes for sheep, rabbits, poultry and dogs were introduced last year, reported Norman Smith, state Extension 4-H program leader. In the dairy cattle competition, Julie Walbert, 13, paraded her yearling Holstein heifer most of the morning before being tagged grand champion showman and fitter over all dairy breeds. The Howard County 4-H’er is a Howard County 4-H'er Karen Fleishell. 14. Wills Fair sheep competition and was named displays her winning form with yearling Suffolk grand champion fitter and showman, ewe Hilltops High Hopes. Howard County also claimed two more showing and fitting grand champs before the day ended. William Ferrell, 17, led his Angus steer into the winners circle as he collected the grand champion showman and fitter in beef com petition. The win occured the week of the Howard County youth’s high school graduation from Glenelg High School. Ferrell, the son of Frances and Willie Ferrell has plans to attend Howard County Community College. The third Howard County youth to earn top showing and fitting honors was 14-year-old Karen Fleishell. Karen exhibited her Irish Setter, “Rebel,” and her yearling Suffolk ewe. Hilltops High Hopes. And it was the ewe that brought the grand champion fitter and showman trophy home tor Karen A 3-year veteran of sheep exhibition, Karen is the daughter of John and Annette Fleishell of Woodbine, Md. Jackie Taylor, 17, of Baltimore County capped eight years of dairy goat showing by earning overall fitting and showing honors in the dairy goat classes. Her entry was 2-year-old doe Permission Acres Fancy Copy A dental assistant student at York County Vo-tech, Karen is the daughter of Marilyn Taylor Nanci Opel, 15, caught the judge’s eye while putting her dog "Bo” through his paces. The Pallotti High School student and her Japanese guard dog, an Akita, went on to collect grand champion showman and fitter honors for the canine compel, tton.
