B24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 5,1982 Farm Bureau finds allies for EEC trade battle BRUSSELS, Belgium Farm Bureau leaders from the U S last week found a group of important allies in their quest to reduce farm trade barriers unposed by nations of the European Economic Community In the EC headquarters city of Brussels, a group of gram trade leaders told Farm Bureau’s delegation that high fixed prices on European gram are beginning to hurt livestock producers who must pay more for the gram they feed their herds And they see resultant problems in their own countries as protectionists policies of the Economic Community drive up consumer prices and add sub stantial costs to the tax load that must cover the cost of subsidized European gram being shipped abroad. Subsidies make up the difference between higher prices European farmers are paid, and the lower world price their exports must be sold for. American Farm Bureau president Robert B. Delano, leading the U.S. delegation of 20 state Farm Bureau presidents told EC leaders that, “American farmers welcome the open market, are willing to compete fairly with anybody in the world, but it is unfair to be asked to compete against the treasuries of the European Common Market countries.” Delano was strongly critical of EC threats to unpose new duties on Tired of gullies?
