To Manage Farm Ponds A nice farm pond is a great asset to any property. Many farms have ponds but too many of them are neglected. A pond needs attention the same as any other area on the farm. If we want that half-acre of ground, that is covered with water, to produce a crop of fish or provide recreation and fire protection, we need to give it some attention. The problem with algae and weeds is very common at this tune of year. Many hours of pleasant swimming, boating or fishing are mined because of the mass of algae or weeds. Numerous chemicals can be used to control these problems but first, a permit should be obtained from the Pennsylvania Fish Commission. Application blanks for this permit are available from any Extension Office or from the local Penn sylvania Waterways patrolman. A good pond requires management. To Select Rams For 1982 Chester D. Hughes, Extension Livestock Agent, says not to wait until the last minute to purchase a ram for this year’s breeding season. Now is an excellent tune to be on the lookout for a ram that can improve wool production, frame size, lamb gams, or percent lamb crop. If you start early enough, you can be more selective. Search for a ram that can improve your next lamb crop for traits most im portant to your situation. You may want to increase milk production, produce polled lambs, improve post weaning gams, or CONVERT IT This to DO Convert your present stave silo to a high moisture grain unit. 1. “Guardian” sealed stefel roof by DeMuth. 2. It is im portant that you study your flock to determine what are your greatest needs. Consider economically important improvements over all others. This year you may consider improving carcass qualities over wool production. Remember to select large frame, sound and healthy rams from flocks with production records. Consider performance tested rams. Try to select rams that are twins to increase percent lamb crop. To Reduce Rural Crime Rural crime has become a sad fact of life. Most facts and figures that we read indicate an increase in rural crime. There are many things you can do to “make crime more trouble than it’s worth.” That would include installing and using locks, bringing your equipment inside, or putting it in a well lighted area at night. Also, do not keep heading chutes near gates. One of the most important things you can do is to establish “crime watch” with your neigh bors You also may be able to borrow an engraving tool from your local police department to mark your equipment with your driver’s license number. Be sure to add DLPA then your number. These letters identify the number as Driver License, Pennsylvania. from This St. Louis Cattle Thursday, June 3 Report supplied by USOA Receipts this week • 3,900 Week Ago. 4,800 Year Ago. 4,200 Compared with last week’s close, slaughter steers and heifers mostly 1.00 higher.
