B32—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 17,1982 Md. Extension director addresses ag alumni COLLEGE PARK, Md. - “The Cooperative Extension Service has functioned best in trying tunes,” says Craig S. Oliver, director for the University of Maryland’s statewide outreach program. Oliver was the principal speaker last month during the seventeenth annual University of Maryland agriculture alumni fellowship night at the Peter Pan Inn near Urbana. He told a near-record crowd of 180 persons that “we will not stand by and fail because we were afraid to make organizational changes.” Oliver noted that .‘ Extension mirrors the society in which it works. Maryland can be proud of its Extension heritage. ” He observed that Maryland leads the nation in no-tillage Extension and research programs. And the state is noted for high quality Extension publications, which are available free at county Extension offices. The Maryland director declared that “the Cooperative Extension Service must be on the cutting edge. But we may have to take a step back before we can go for ward again.” He mentioned moving back to basic skills. By contrast, a new computerized Estel project now being introduced on the lower Eastern Shore will enable both farmers and homemakers to tap into space-age electronic technology for the latest information on weather, markets and current research. This system is expected to be available on a statewide basis by 1984. Following Oliver's talk, awards of excellence were presented to five individuals by John R. Remsberg, Jr., of Middletown, Frederick County, president of the College of Agriculture Alumni chapter of the University of Maryland Alumni Association- International. Excellence in Teaching—Elmer L. Cooper of Adelphi, assistant professor of agricultural and extension education. Cooper is a former vocational agriculture teacher m Harford county and former vocational specialist for the state Department of Education. Excellence m Extension— Herbert L. Brodie of Chestertown, Extension specialist in agricultural engineering. Brodie works in the area of water and waste systems. He maintains an office at CentreviUe. Excellence in Research— Frederick W. Wheaton of Norwood Village, professor of agricultural engineering. Wheaton has provided national leadership 'n developing aquacultui ai engineering as a branch of the agricultural engineering profession. His work has had significant positive influence on production and quality control in Maryland’s seafood industry. Outstanding Seniors—Henry A Affeldt, Jr. of Ellicott City, Howard County, and James A. Kane, Jr of Avenue, St. Marys County. Affeldt is majoring in agricultural engineering, and Kane is a senior in animal science. Both students exhibited high scholarship and leadership ability while working their way through college Finally, Paul S. Weller of Chevy Chase, Montgomery County, a past president, presented the chapter’s annual meritorious service award to Paul R. Poffenberger of Fairland, Montgomery County. Poffenberger is associate dean emeritus of the College of Agriculture.
