Dog training season
closed until August
HARRISBURG Dog owners
are reminded by the Pennsylvania
Game Commission that the dog
training season will be closed in
the state from April 1 through July
31.
The closed season period is
designed to protect wildlife during
the critical nesting period.
The only possible exceptions are
in certain counties where petitions
have been filed to permit fox
and/or raccoon chasing with dogs,
and m certain instances where
field trials or dog training areas
have been approved by the Game
Commission.
Fox chasing petitions have been
filed for counties listed below.
Chasing of foxes with dogs is
permitted in these counties except
for the 60-dav period indicated;
April 1 to May 30. Allegheny,
Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford
Berks, Blair, Bradford, Butler,
Cambria, Centre. Clarion,
Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia,

Chapter advisor is Charles
Bechdel Jr., of the Vocational
Agriculture Department staff at
Manheim Central High School.
Also participating in the
program were Lewis Jury, who
extended greetings on behalf of the
Manheim Central School District;
and Mike Pflieger, who
represented the Manheim FFA
Chapter.
Prior to the announcement of the
chapter’s Outstanding Young
Farmer honors, it was explained
that the work of the selection
committee was quite difficult due
to the outstanding qualities and
accomplishments of several
candidates. For example, the
major camdidates averaged some
11 years in their agricultural
professions, farmed some 240
acres and averaged 130 bushels of
com per acre.
A brief slide presentation was
shown of Kettering’s combined hog
and steer operation. The operation
includes some 250 acres of corn, 70

total 35,000 bushels and the farm
even has its own set of vehicular
scales, which are used as a
management tool to measure such
things as com yields.
Poultry and dairy award winners among Manheim Young
Farmers are Bob Keller, (eft, egg production; and Nelson
Wenger, who swept the milk and butterfat production
awards.
Speaker for the evening was
Karl Kettering, of Ephrata,
management consultant and
motivational speaker. He spoke on
the need for enthusiasm in a
person’s endeavors, along with a
positive attitude, which will help
bring success m reaching one’s
